Let's just say Sanders gets elected. OW! Since he's already mentioned taxing the really wealthy 90% would there even be any point in playing?

Now that I've got that out of the way I'm with the others here that don't want to see $1B again. The media frenzy and all the sudden 'experts' are a bit much.

Just my $.02

sounds like at that point everyone will want to select the annuity option.

Yes. And if you win, take the annuity. More of the winnings will be taxed at a lower rate (remember, tax rates are marginal) , and there's a good chance that taxes will be cut again in a later administration.

      maximumfun, Murgatoyd,

If comrade Bernie was in office even the annuity payments would be taxed at 90% too.

      Everyone,

Don't forget we haven't seen a solo billion dollar jackpot yet.

Don't forget, the annuity runs for 30 years, and Bernie would be in office for at most 8. What are the odds that whoever got elected after him would have cutting taxes as a top priority?

Too late Enigmas, MM has already changed the format of their game. What used to be around 175 mil to 1 odds is now 258,890,850 to 1 odds

I think that the jackpot doesn't increase as fast as Powerball since each MM game costs only $1 compared to PB's $2 price.

I would hope they wouldn't but twice before they made MM matrix changes to a version that wasn't over 3.5 years old, or 348 and 324 drawings. This version is almost 2.5 years old (237 drawings).

Is there any one here at LP who wouldn't complain about forking over 99% of a jackpot, all at once or year by year, even for four or eight years?

Not sure about who would follow him but once a populace gets used to being enslaved and a generation comes up that never knew freedom that nation is sunk.

you could put it into TIPS some sort of tax paid  muni bonds.  I'd like to think i could sit out the (cough) 8 years bernie is in power without buying a ticket.

                Ooops- I meant 90%, not 99%.

UPDATE: No winner in Wednesday's 2/4/16 Powerball drawing.

The jackpot was increased to $136 mil. which represents an increase of 21.42857%.

If there continues to be no winner, the jackpot should reach the $1 billion mark within 10 drawings (approx March 12th)

Here's another update. It's based on the progression for the last jackpot, so the actual numbers will vary a bit (slightly bigger jackpot amounts, somewhat  lower chance), but here are the chances of rolling beyond each jackpot level:

                          1.  $202 million   57.5%
                          2.  $227 million   48.3%

                          4.  $300 million   57.5%

Yes, the chance of a winner depends on ticket sales. Ticket sales, in turn, are closely related to the jackpot size.
