Hi Kamba,
Welcome to the LP community! I'd say you've been fairly lucky to be about even. Typically, most games pay back about 50 to 75 cents per dollar. If you play long-term, you'll very likely roll into the negative unless you hit bigger prizes (1ks, 5ks, 10ks, and up or the elusive jackpot).
When I first started playing, I won $500 SIX times over the span of a week (5 on $20 Gold Rush, and 1 on $25 Fl Cash). This was definitely some beginners luck, but also likely supports the theory of "pooling" and "hot/cold" rolls seeded within areas in order to boost sales revenue. I literally drove from a Publix, hit $500, then drove to another publix down the road and found two more $500 prizes. Then I drove to the Winn Dixie, found a $500, hit a gas station on the way back ($500). I think four of those $500 prizes were hit in one day, and then the other two happened over the week. I won $1k on FL Cash shortly after, $1k on Holiday Gifts a couple months after that, and then my losing streak has started. While I was "up" about $3000 at one point, now I'm well in the negatives by several thousand (probably about $10k at this point with how many splurges and books I've played through). I've only been playing scratchers for about a year now, but due to the high quantity of tickets I've played, I quickly went from being "up" to into the "negatives" (the normal return rate caught up to me, and a lack of big wins kept me in the negatives).
My personal recommendation:
1- Since it sounds like you have good self-control, I'd say maybe buy 1 or 2 tickets randomly here or there. I hear of people hitting big on $2, and $5 tickets (someone just won $5000 on a $5 ticket a couple pages back on this thread). Big winners can come anywhere, not just the $10, $20, or $25 tickets. Someone who struggles with self-control should stay away from the "bigger" tickets because becoming addicted on those will almost always ensure you are in the negatives unless you hit a big prize (20k, 100k, or a jackpot).
2- Never chase. I don't follow this rule because I've become addicted, but typically if you encounter alot of losers more often than not the roll you're playing on is a "low payout" roll ($205/$600 is the minimum for $10, and $20 tickets).
@Dracos - I agree with your depiction of how your financial results will work out long term. Last year was great, but I have gotten beat up pretty good this year. That is why I am finishing up my lotto career with the $2M Holiday ticket and the Super Millions - until the last top prize is won in both games or they become unavaiable. (I may dabble in the $2M Jackpot if the opportunity arises) I've had no luck with the newer games and the top prizes are being largely skewed to higher top prizes that are much harder to win for the marketing purposes to drive up sales. If I wanted "pie in the sky odds" for a big top prize, I'd play Powerball or MegaMillions. I am not saying I won't play after the Holiday and SM prizes are won, but I am going to stick to my budget of $100/month and hope to be at the right place at the right time.

I have a similar story.
In one week I won $100 at 3 different places on one of the $25 games.
I never buy more than one big $20 or $25 card a time or two.
I am someone who doesn't spend much money on things. This is one of my few habits.
I want to win $100k or 1 million. I want to use the money to buy a home on the West Coast and leave Florida behind. I am doing better than most Americans, but I have had so much family heartbreak in recent years. I've helped everyone in my family. I'm very generous.
I live in South Florida. So I understand I have better odds living here. So far only down $23 on a $565 investment over the last month.
I've played all levels, but the bigger cards are more fun for me.
I bought 20 $1 cards a few weeks ago and won $33. One of the cards was $30 and the other 3 were a $1 each.

Best of luck to everyone.
I hear you Gators. If you're still interested in playing $10 Holiday Gifts, I imagine AK Qwik still has 10-20 rolls. It has been a month since I've stopped by there, but they had at least 10 rolls that were book #50k or under (with several in the 24k-30k range).
I'm wishing you the best of luck on Super Millions, or Holiday Gifts and hope you hit the jackpot on one of them. You've invested so much into them that you deserve a break. I definitely support you in cutting back after Holiday Gifts and Super Millions have their last prizes hit. Making money off interest, and saving money for retirement is something that is extremely important.
I'm personally just done with scratch tickets. I think I allowed my beginners luck last year to lead me into delusions thinking I'd hit $1k+ again. While searching for big hits, I've given the FL Lottery that back and more. The only positive thing I keep telling myself is I'm under $25k in student loans/credit card for my bachelors/master degree (which isn't terrible), and I can afford to have "SNIPPED" up at least once in my 20s, eh? I consider my lottery splurge that financial mistake, but even then it isn't the worst loss since it does support education. (Many of us benefited from Bright Futures scholarships or the public school system) From this point on, I'm just paying bills whenever I get paychecks and hoping to make a big dent on that number down to the $17k-18k mark by Christmas. By NOT playing the lottery, I "find" $500 and up prizes.
If there's any Super Millions tickets in Cape Coral, you'd better drive down and get them!

I still say you've been fairly lucky Kamba. I'd call it beginners luck to have had such a good return. There are times where even $25 tickets can have STREAKS of 5-8 losers in a row. The $20 Gold Rush used to be a safe bet because it frequently had $500 winners in the number range #6-13. When I first started playing, I set a rule of only buying $20 Gold Rush tickets in that range and noticed most of my $500 wins came in that range. It seems times change with waves, and I've also heard of people observing the opposite end of the book having big winners. Sometimes the first, and last tickets on a roll end up offering a good return so those are ones you might look out for.
Lottery tickets go through "hot" and "cold" streaks. Time, and place is also everything. I think you're smart to buy 1 $20/$25 ticket at a time because it forces you to be rational about your habits. Just make sure you follow this rule, and don't break it otherwise you'll become a salty player like me! =p
South Florida *may* have more jackpots hit, but it also has the largest population density in the state. What stores do you play at? I'd assume Publix, Kangaroo Gas Stations, and 7-Elevens are probably some of the better locations to play at regardless due to the large amount of traffic. These stores order lottery ticket rolls like candy, so big winners pass through those locations naturally due to sales.
@ Everyone - I noticed in Gainesville that I've played a $20 Monopoly in the 137k range, and $5 Monopoly in the 146k range. The $10 Monopoly tickets are still lagging behind and in the 40k-80k range. I wouldn't recommend anyone touch those until the 120k+ range again since 2 jackpots have been hit.

Hey all... Thought id stop in and tell you guys about my night last night.. Went to the Blink 182 concert in Tampa, then went to Hard Rock Casino. Tables were packed and limits were high, so I stuck to slot machines. Mostly 2c machines, betting between, $2 and $4 a spin. I took $400 to gamble with. The first $300 went in a flash. Nothing hitting at all. Moved machines and stuck to $2 bets and quickly lost $95.50. I had 50c in the machine and lowered my bet to 50c which is like 2c a line x25 lines or something...
Anyways, I FINALLY and for the first time hit the bonus games trigger. ended up picking 20 free games x2. Hit the re-trigger FOUR TIMES. Ended up with a total of 64 free spins and by the time it got done spinning them all <about 12 minutes> I had went from 50c to $829. Cashed out. drove home.

So $20 Monopoly first $5MM prize was won on book #0055581 and lotto posted the second one today, it's on book #0114089 ticket #4.
So perhaps we are talking a 5M hit about every 50k rolls? We should be looking at 150k thru 180k roll numbers for the next one? What say you statistics experts?
