Well... I dont even know where to begin, but I am NOT happy with the State of Florida, or more specifically the Charlotte County Sheriffs Department. On Saturday morning, The wife and I got in the car to take the drive to AK Kwik. Crossed over the river and into Chatlotte County on I75 at 8am. Got pulled over during a random "rolling check point"... Officer asked me if I had any weapons/drugs in the car, which I politely said No to. When I went to give him my Insurance and Registration, he saw the cash in my glove box, along with my Springfield Armory XDS .45... Immediately asked us to exit the car. I explained to him that I have my CCW which I showed him and then explained about the $35k in cash I was carrying and what it was for.
HE THEN PROCEEDED TO DETAIN US FOR 2 HOURS AND SEIZE MY FIREARM AND MONEY.
During that time, I showed him my bank statement, showed him on my phone how I had that store on GPS, and explained that cash is the only payment option. He FINALLY, after 2 hours, and talking to about 12 other officers, gave everything back and sent us on our way. I was so mad, at the entire situation that we just came home. I was in a bad mood the rest of the weekend, then back to work Sunday night. I never made it up there. Sounds like someone else bought out 200ms? Who knows. Im still mad as hell and considering legal action for illegal search and seizure and unlawful detainment.
Wow, man. So sorry that happened.
I'm not normally a litigious person, but in this case I'd talk to a lawyer pronto. It's none of their <snip> business why you have that cash on you, and having your CCW certainly takes care of the XDS (by the way, I used to have one of those, excellent choice).

Consider yourself lucky you didn't get your money seized. There's alot of that going around to innocent people who carry large amounts of cash and it being seized under the guise of it could be drug money.

That does suck. I was worried this story was going to end in another horrible "civil forfeiture" case with the cops taking the $ and you having to prove your innocence to get it back. Glad they thought better of it, though likely only for 2 reasons. First, apparently Florida just adjusted the civil forfeiture laws in the state as of July 1st. Secondly, they may have realized that if you had that much money for lottery, you likely had enough to sue the piss out of their county and to make a big problem for them. Though that does really suck and I completely understand how much that pissed you off, I'm glad it wasn't worse.
Also, seeing as how someone bought out the 200MS - if nothing is claimed on that game in the next couple of weeks you may have ended up saving $.

The story brought this back to mind. Just disgusting.
Also, rolling check point at 8am? Where the hell are they at 3AM when I see the drunks ripping around like the police don't exist?
And where the hell were they when I literally dodged a car driving south in northbound lanes, missing the other car by likely feet (it all happened too fast, I don't know how much I dodged him by or how I didn't end up in the grassy area between north/south) on 95?
Sounds like the good ole boys in West FL have too much time on their hands trying to luck into the crime of the century rather than really looking for criminals.

I typed that all a little fast. I told him NO to drugs. I told him YES to the firearm and told him/showed him my CCW.
I've done a lot of traveling along I-75. That Charlotte point is notorious speed trap area between PC and Venice. It's equivalent to Mile Marker 364 where the cops sit in the median, just before Exit 374 in Micanopy, and right before entering Payne's Prarie.
Really sad you had to deal with this. I have been through something similar a few years ago when I had to go report for a Muster at Moody AFB. Because there was some BS info out on me by my last base in DE, I was detained/cuffed for over 3 hours before I was finally allowed to leave. Those situations aren't fun.

And this issue also exists on a greater level, through racial bias as well. I don't want to start a political conversation l, but just imagine if you or Adam were people of color. They gave you both a hard time, but people of color sometimes have to deal with more extreme cases. There's research that shows how prevalent racial profiling is
Some personal anecdotes from someone who is biracial...
I've been stopped, and even held at gun point before by police for simply living in a low income high crime neightborhood and having an afro when I was younger. I am, and always have been respectful to officers but have been mistreated or randomly searched for just coming from the grocery store. I kid you not, I was once searched for walking back from a Winn Dixie for having milk, eggs, and bread.
My brother was once handcuffed and slammed to the ground for asking if an officer had a warrant. There's alot of discretionary action, and often inconsistencies in legal processes.

You actually don't have to get out of the car, but if you don't it just escalates the situation as they think you are hiding something. Cops deal with criminals all day, so they start treating everyone as if they are criminals. My mother was a probation officer for a few years and I saw this wear on her as she started to treat everyone in the family as if they were lying immediately. Unfortunate Adam, but look at the bright side. You still have 35k, however if someone claims the last 200ms or the lottery went and picked them up it might be super suspect. I would ask the owners of the store what happened to their stock of 200 ms.
Sorry to hear you've had this experience as I've had something similar happen to me.

Seriously!
If I ever hit big, I mean WHEN I hit big on the new $20 Monopoly ticket... I'm heading back to Greece. My dad's family still lives over there, and there's nothing comparing the people, food, and atmosphere there. I've lived in Orlando for several years, and prefer it to Jacksonville at least. There's some decent touristy stuff to do in Orlando, and it inclusive options for family members of all ages.
