Had not played a scatcher in over a month. I stuck to mostly super lotto and mega mil. Last night I was walking down the street by my house to catch some peaceful air and walk by the usual Shell gas station that I have never bought a scratcher from after living 5 years in that area (I live by the Ca/Mx border). Anyways I go in and there is the last $20  5million jackpot ticket. I said why not. The kind old man rips it out and gives it to me. It was number 029. My birthday number. Ok I go home and scratch it with my mother.  Nothing. LOSER. Not even a free ticket. That was my chill Saturday night.

Found some luck today. I picked up 4 $10 Lucky Life and got three duds plus a $100 winner. All numbers matched on the ticket and all were $5 wins. Ticket number was 009.

Thats real good. You made $60. I just picked up a $5 lucky life at a food market and nothing.

I wish they had Top Prizes tickets per county. Theres only a few top prizes per scratcher distributed in over 20k lottery retailers across the golden state. A big $5million ticket winner can be in the most rural area in a lonely food market in a deserted highway lol..  It's all about faith though.

Yeah, one of the $5 million winner in the $20 scratcher game won at a store in Happy Camp, CA, a tiny town of 1,200 people near the Oregon border!

I live in San Ysidro,CA (San Diego) a small community right next to the CA/MX border port of entry. One top prize must be floating around here lol. Its all about timing and patience.

Though it may not cover your recent losses, Congrats on the find!

Rather than hoping to find the retailer who carries the winning ticket, the best shot of winning the grand prize is through the second chance program. If you have at least 5 entered, it will be better odds than buying tickets to scratch off the top prize.

If it wasn't for the Second Chance program I wouldn't even buy scratchers.

Your totally correct. I also stopped buying scratchers for a month. But having a seven eleven , a liqour store, and two food marts in less than a half mile radius from my house, it's very tempting. But I still dont buy anymore like I used too. A few dollars a week towards the Super lotto and mega millions is a better bet in my opinion. You got me thinking on the Second Chance program though.. I read about it and it seems like a good second chance to win deal..

Second chance entries are a psychological ploy by the lottery so players can feel better about their losing tickets.

I play both scratchers and jackpot games and  i get much more enjoyment per dollar from the big jackpot games even though I never win anything. With scratchers I can't help but scratch them immediately and then its over. With draw games I can spend a few hours thinking about it before I lose and its only a couple dollars.

I just view Scratchers more like a big raffle, a losing ticket buys an entry to the top prize drawing and a winning ticket provides somewhat of a discount to the losing ticket entries (e.g. I buy 3 $10 tickets, one $20 winner comes from it, so my 2 entries to the top prize draw costed $5 instead of $10). The second chance is one of the reasons Scratchers  sales received a surge a few years ago.

Scratchers are the cash cow of the lottery as patience is a virtue not many people have. People get instant results and in addition, people see winners (break evens or double ups) more frequently than the jackpot games (most of the time a few dollars if you hit the mega/power ball along with matching 1 or 2 numbers).

I would say there is an entertainment element to casino games as those provide a roller coaster experience with your bankroll. Lottery games should be played with the expectation that your bet will most likely not be returned, so those should be kept to a safe minimum.

Earlier this week, a top prize for the recent $10 game Millionaire Club was taken off.

That's a good point in your third graph; the Lottery--and especially California Lottery Scratchers--should be viewed with the expectation that you're going to lose your money. So many times you see people losing hundreds of dollars on these tickets and they're lucky to get back half. I'm on an indefinite hiatus from the Lottery (at least until November) and my only means of gambling is reduced to a once a month casino visit.

I fall in the same boat, lost thousands of dollars over the last few years for a shot at the big second chance prize. Nothing much to show for it after buying 10,000+ tickets. I pretty much cut back to ten tickets a month and I have called 1-800-GAMBLER in the past.

Casino does provide some good alternatives to what the CA Lottery offers, at least you get something back for your play if you use a casino club card.

After trying out IGT Caveman Keno or even Cleopatra Keno video keno this year, I would never play HotSpot again. Multicard Keno is good too.

Instead of buying a $10 scratcher, try this instead:

Spend $10 on 10 Daily 3 tickets with straight bet, identical numbers on each ticket.

You have 1/1000 chance of winning $5000 tax free ($500 typical Daily 3 prize times 10)
