I saw that another top prize for California Millionaire Club got claimed so I went with ten $10 Wheel of Fortunes to add to my small total of entries to 2nd Chance draw.

Tickets #25 - 34

26 - $15

28 - $25 ($10 + $15)

30 - $20 ($10 x $10)

Congratulations on the nice find! Always rare to find a winner worth more than $100 in the CA Lottery. As a heads up, winners from the CA Lottery does not get much attention on that thread since lottery from other states seem to be more middle tier heavy while this state is bottom tiers heavy. They see $500 winners all the time, probably will take a $5000+ winner as eye popping.

Last week the 10th top prize was claimed off. Rumors have it from a hardcore player on their Facebook page that retailers cannot order anymore of these scratchers, if there is any truth to it, the top prize pace has caught up with the sales pace and these tickets are not worth getting any more.

You can say that again about the bottom tier winners. Went on a bit of a spree this past weekend with the Million $$ Match; nine tickets purchased at separate locations, six winners, all within the $20 to $40 range. Pretty bad, but still better than the awful 5MJP (and congrats to the earlier $500 winner).

claimed another winner for 100 and then a 20 winner.  yeah I see there are only 4 more top prizes left, honestly, I'll take the 100k if I'm lucky to run into that.  I prefer the 5M JP vice the Million Match because of the odds.  I picked up some more of the 5M Jackpot from my 500 so I will see how that goes.

Another Million $$ Match top prize claimed. So half of top prizes gone and ticket sales are less than a quarter. I think this game should be avoided for at least a few months.

Good to know on Million $$ Match.  I have been playing that one occasionally but I play mostly CA Millionaire and Wheel Of Fortune with $10 LFL in there.  I really am only buying from 2-3 retailers.  One in Fountain Valley and 2 in Costa Mesa.  My odds have been good and as a whole on the year I am probably just under even.  I was given a pack of CA Millionaire last month and ended up at about $365 for $500 spent.  Pretty much the norm.  I do it just for something to do for a week while I am out of town at a convention.

I have been getting a lot of $50 and $100 winners the past month.  They come in bunches for some reason.  What is interesting is that each place I go seems to have certain games that pay off better than others.  One place is great for Wheel, the other for CA Millionaire so I buy certain ones at certain places.  It's on my way home so it's easy.  At this point it is almost like grabbing a cup of coffee on the way to work:  routine.  At the end of some weeks I am up a lot, others I end up down but I have scaled back a lot of purchasing.

I am noticing the jackpot winners seem to be more desolate and broke people than normal so that seems to be the demographic that is really playing it a lot right now.  Maybe that's due to the economic situation being tougher.  More dreamers playing.  Makes me also wonder how many of these people just end up in the dumpster who aren't winning.

If you are breaking even for the year then you are ahead of the game.

I picked up a few random scratchers today and got some break even wins which allowed me to keep playing for a while.

I think I will focus on $5 20x the money I think the first jackpot will pop soon. For $10 I like Wheel of Fortune because of the blue color.

To answer your question, they will withhold 25% of that amount so you will get a check of $3750. There is only Federal tax of $1250 paid by you, there is no state taxes in California.

You file a federal tax return, with $5000 additional income coming from W2-G on your scratcher win, there will be a field where you withheld $1250 (paid by taxes).

With standard deductions and tax write offs, if you are not at the 28% federal tax bracket. If you are around the 15/25% mark, you will like retrieve some of the $1250 withheld money back.

It is harder to report gambling losses with the lottery, must have kept all receipts of scratcher purchases and hold on to all winners and losers. It is easier to do it for casino gambling with a player card.

Did not complete the post, if the winner are in the higher tax brackets, he or she might even owe a little more than that withheld.

                          http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040tt.pdf

If a person made $30,000 this year, with that win he or she is in $35,000 income range.

The person if single owes $4808, but deduct $1250 of that, $3558 becomes the final amount. Usually employers withold a good amount on paychecks.
